The Liver Bird began life as an eagle, stamped into Liverpool's civic seal after King John granted the town its charter in 1207. Centuries of crude engraving and wishful thinking softened the eagle into a cormorant and the eagle's sprig into seaweed, and a city found its emblem by happy accident. Two of her descendants have stood 300 feet above the Mersey since 1911, wings half-raised on the Royal Liver Building — Bella facing out to sea for the ships coming home, Bertie turned inland over the city. Local lore says should they ever take flight, Liverpool falls with them.

This one is cast in solid 9ct Yellow Gold and modelled fully in the round, so she's just as good from the back. Feathers chased with fine texture, the long legs and webbed feet picked out, polished highlights catching against the deeper chasing.

EXCELLENT: The Gold surfaces are bright with only light surface scratches and minimal wear to the high points, consistent with age. The crisp feather detailing and sculptural form are well preserved, with a secure bail and jump ring. No gemstones are present and no signs of repair are evident.
